Horse Care

TOP

We offer livery, breaking, schooling, clipping, trimming, show preparation and training

Livery

TOP

Different livery options are available. Call for more information. Full livery with stabling is available, although the majority of our owners prefer Full Grass livery.

With all year round grazing and turn-out the horses live happily together in a herd. The horses are separated into smaller herds as necessary depending on their weight for restricted grazing, and also according to which horses get along.

We have a centrally organised worming programme to ensure the well-being of all our horses. The grazing is rotated according to the condition of the field and the needs of the horses. Some of the fields are shared with sheep which helps with the health of the field. During harsher winter months grazing may be supplemented with hay.

We have stabling available, but most of our horses prefer living out as a herd

The facilities at the riding school are available for use for liveries, outside of lesson times.

The facilities are 40m x 20m outdoor arena, a jumping paddock, moveable jumps and cross-country jumps. We are located in beautiful area with miles of riding paths available.

We are a friendly yard, with livery owners of different ages, many ride out together, and people are always willing to introduce you to the routes.

Breaking and Schooling

TOP

We will work with you to identify your end goals and develop a plan of how to get there. Whether it be a horse that has never been ridden, bringing a horse back into work or tuning up your horse give us a call to discuss your requirements.

Lungeing is one of the techniques we use to work the horse

We also offer lessons for you with your horse, so that you can both make the most of the training development.

Equine B&B

TOP

We can also offer short term accommodation for your horse.

We often accommodate horses brought to the area for shows.

Those down in the Gower for a holiday can bring their horse to us and make the most of the beautiful countryside, beaches and miles of bridleways available.

Clipping and Trimming

TOP

We will clip to whatever style that you want, and if you are not sure then we will discuss with you what will best suit your needs depending on the nature of the work your horse will do and how you keep it.

As well as standard clips we will also clip to show up freezemarks better.

Call us for more information.

Show Preparation

TOP

Tuition

TOP

We offer basic to advanced tuition in a range of disciplines. The minimum age for riding is 4 years old.

Please give us a call to see if we can accommodate your personal requirements.

Riding

TOP

General Riding - Basic to Advanced

We offer riding lessons tailored to suit the ability of the horse and rider combinations. The minimum age for riding is 4 years old.

For the safety and comfort of both horse and rider, the horses are allocated depending on the riders height, weight and riding experience.

We offer private lessons, lunge lessons, shared private lessons (2 or 3 riders) or group lessons (more than 4 riders).

An adult shared private lesson

A private lesson

Private lessons allow the rider to have the full focus of the instructor. This is great for beginners or nervous riders to help grow their confidence as well as for more experienced riders to work on developing their skills.

Lunge lessons are a private lesson where the instructor keeps the horse working on a circle around them using a special long rope. This frees the rider to concentrate on their balance and riding position without worrying about where the horse is going. As above it is great for all levels of rider, it helps instill confidence and develop the riders position.

A shared private children's lesson

Shared private lessons and group lessons allow you to work more with other riders, and give you a bit more time to focus on your riding.

Dressage

We offer tuition in dressage. As well working on the movement of horse and rider in general we can help you work on specific tests, and can offer training days or mock test days, depending on demand.

Show Jumping

We have moveable jumps allowing us to teach in the jumping paddock or the arena. As above these can be private lessons or group lessons. Clinics or courses can be arranged depending on demand.

Cross Country

We have a small cross-country course available for training. As above these can be private lessons or group lessons. Clinics or courses can be arranged depending on demand.

Side-Saddle

This is offered as private lessons only.

Courses

TOP

Riders are allocated a horse to care for

Riders get the opportunity to build up a relationship with the horses

Young riders getting ready to catch their ponies. They will learn how to do things in a safe and confident manner

Half and Full Day Courses

These courses allow riders to learn / improve their riding and horse care. Each rider is allocated a horse for the duration of the session, they are taught how to take care of that horse, and given one or two lessons/rides. Once the riders are able to carry out basic tasks such as mucking out, grooming, tacking up etc. it leaves more time on the course to look at more varied skills, this may include bandaging, plaiting, shoeing, horse health or a demonstration / lecture on other aspects of riding or horse care.

Own A Pony (OAP) Courses

The children are allocated a pony, that they will look after and have a lesson or ride out. As well as being a lot of fun the sessions allow them to learn a lot about the ponies, grow in confidence and work as a team.

A typical half day schedule would be

  • Muck out stables and replenish water
  • Catch Ponies, and brush
  • Break for squash
  • Tack up Ponies
  • Ride
  • Untack and make ponies comfortable

Holiday Courses

Courses run over multiple days, each rider is allocated a horse to care for and ride. The level of the course is tailored to those taking it. As well as learning about basic stable care it leaves more time on the course to look at more varied skills, this may include bandaging, plaiting, shoeing, horse health or a demonstration / lecture on other aspects of riding or horse care.

There are many wonderful hotels and guest houses in the area that can provide accommodation should you wish to stay in the area for the course. Please look out our 'Links' section for some suggestions.

Special Childrens'/ Adults Days

These are days as described above and are held throughout the year depending on demand.

Children's day - learning to wash a tail and prepare a pony for shows.

Half day courses include one lesson or ride out, typically full day courses include 2.

Lectures on horse care and riding will include hands-on elements or demonstrations.

Exam Preparation

TOP

We offer preparation for the BHS Progressive Riding Tests. When there are enough candidates available an external examiner is invited to the yard to carry out the tests.

The BHS progressive Riding Tests offer the opportunity for riding school clients, junior or senior, to assess and develop their level of practical and theoretical knowledge within a structured framework.

We can also help you to prepare for other equine related exams. Call us to discuss your requirements for exam preparation, we offer tuition for both riding and stable management elements.

TOP

As well as offering courses where you can learn about stable management and ride, we can offer you the opportunity to concentrate fully on the stable management, horse care or preparation for shows.

This is offers the chance for those who wish to improve their knowledge and ability in these skills to really focus on them. It is also an ideal opportunity for those nervous of horses or parents wanting to help their children to build up confidence around horses and learn how to handle them.

Riding Out

TOP

We offer rides out for differing abilities in the beautiful Gower Countryside.

All of our rides are accompanied, and riders must obey the Ride Leader. The speed and route of the ride will depend on the assessment of the riding abilities of the riders on the day. The minimum age for riding out is 10.

Accompanied Rides

TOP

All of our rides will begin with a short ride in an enclosed area. This allows the rider to get know the horse before we leave, and also allows the ride leader to assess the ability of the riders to determine the safest route and speed at which to take the ride. Each ride will go at the speed of the slowest rider. To ensure that you have the type of ride that you want it is important that you tell us honestly your experience and skill in riding when you book.

Trekking is a slower ride that gives everyone a chance to gain confidence and to enjoy the countryside at a leisurely pace. For the less confident rider we can offer rides on the lead rein, please see below for more information. Trekking is available for riders 10 years old or older.

Hacking offers the riders a chance to go at a faster point at specific points in the ride. It may also allow the ride to travel further afield in the same time. Riders will only be able to go at a faster pace if it is deemed safe by the Ride Leader, the ride will go at the pace of the slowest rider.

The shortest ride that we offer is 1 hour, and we offer up to full day rides.

Beginner Rides

TOP

Riders over 10

We can offer rides on the lead rein to our less confident riders, where the horse is lead by a member of staff on another horse. This will be charged at the rate of a private ride as each lead horse needs its own member of staff.

Riders under 10

Unfortunately we cannot take riders under 10 years of age out on rides. However, as part of their riding lesson they can be lead around our paddocks as a small ride.

Picnic Rides

TOP

We offer full day picnic rides.
